Day 3396: Naming It

I’m naming it, here and now, that I’ve written previous blog posts named “naming it” because naming it is a helpful coping strategy.

Earlier this week, people in therapy named how naming your feelings — including grief, anxiety, fear, sadness, and anger — can help you deal with those feelings. And I recently read an article, which I can’t name right now, that cited scientific proof that naming feelings can help relieve them.

Can you name any examples of naming it in my images for today?

I’m naming that (1) The Daily Bitch Calendar is a great name for my favorite calendar and (2) there are many National Hairball Awareness Days around here.

Here’s what I find on YouTube when I search for “naming it.”

At the end of each post, I name my thanks for all the people who help me blog every day, and your name is on that gratitude list!

  1. did you ever see the movie “Dave”, it will cheer you up, i’d call the valve lucky, hope the day goes great, amen

  2. The brain is a weird thing – I guess having the title of the post in the back of my mind and with Miki’s “We equate winning with…(etc.)”, one of my favorite bits of song lyric came up unbidden: “They got a name for the winners in the world; (I) I want a name when I lose” If we’re naming it, I guess we can name it the Deacon Blues…

  3. Asking for input on what to name your mechanical heart valve might be one of the more unusual tweets recently!

  4. I love this! Naming it. The brain loves just the right word or concept that fits feelings. And feeling seen and heard. Witnessed.

  5. The Klein bottle reminds me of topology, a fascinating science, and also Robert “I Can’t Stop My Leg” Klein whose memoir, The Amorous Busboy Of Decatur Avenue, I enjoyed.
I also enjoy all of Emily Dickinson’s poetry. She never managed to publish anything in her lifetime but now we know she was a great poet.

  6. I’m going to name my feeling of ‘dizzy’ when trying to look at and understand that bottle.

  7. You quoted one of my very favorite poems, and I think Mary Oliver has a way of adding perspective that heals the rough places in my soul. I have a need to name almost everything. Sometimes I think I overdo it, but I’m not comfortable with ambiguity. Have a good weekend, Ann!

  8. Another good name for your valve would be Precious, Ann, a feeling that washes over me from your observations of life as well as a word that describes your relationship to so many people that you touch.

  9. I am naming how I feel right now, tired, emotional, and a little anxious!
