Day 2912: When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time

When someone showed me this quote from Maya Angelou, I believed them the first time.

When someone shows me who they are and they are scary, scared, disturbed, angry, hurt, or unkind, I believe them the first time. I also want to believe they can get better. I believe that is because I am a psychotherapist.

I also believe people have to be themselves and some people are more capable of change than others.

Do I show you who I am when I show you the images I capture for this blog?

When The Daily Bitch showed me who she was years ago, I believed her the first time (and every time since).

When someone showed up on a truck in my neighborhood yesterday …

… I believed it was Santa.

Here are Maya Angelou and Oprah Winfrey showing you who they are as they talk about this important life lesson.

When you show me who you are in a comment, I’ll believe you.

I’ve been showing you who I am — a grateful person — since I first started this blog, and I hope you believe me!

  1. A good idea for all politicians to be put to work in hospitals!

  2. I accept that everyone has good days and bad days and when someone says, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t being myself” I believe them. We all make mistakes. Hopefully by showing myself to be forgiving I can help others show themselves to be the same way.

  3. I don’t know why animals have no problems with showing you who they are, and Harley is an example.

  4. I think all of us are more than one person, like the collection of stones in the photos of your stone garden you sometimes post. Over our lifetime, our job is to get all of our various and diverse inner selves working together, and figure out which sets the course and does the talking. It is only natural — even a good sign — if there is a bit of chaos and disorder at times as we sort ourselves out.

I think each of us reacts differently according to each circumstance, I think how we adapt to the social environment sometimes forms our character. How would you answer the question?- I love the lit peace sign, Ann

  6. i think we see a lot of who you are in your pictures, always seeking out peace, serenity, kindness, and humor in life, and also trying to make things better when you see things that aren’t so positive.

  7. Have thought of Angelou’s quote so many times in the last year….LOTS of people showing me who they really are, and it isn’t pretty. January 20 cannot get here soon enough. And you *always* show yourself to be a thoughtful, compassionate, funny human being, Ann.☺️

  8. Such a sound sentiment

  9. I think I got the last of the lizards off my driveway after work last night, Ann.
