Day 2526: Motivation

I’m having trouble working up the motivation to do things these days, including

  • finishing my country song “What’s Keeping Me Up is What’s Going Down” and
  • applying to do another show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

I’m NOT having trouble working up the motivation to

  • blog and
  • spend time with people I love, including my ex-sister-in-law Deborah, who recently adopted a wonderful English Setter named Lake.

I’m not sure why I feel like this …

… when I think about finishing my latest original song or applying to do “Group Therapy with Ann” again at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Maybe it’s the fear of failure?  Or maybe it’s the ENFP’s resistance to finishing things and filling out forms.

In any case, I do have the motivation to share my other photos from yesterday.

I don’t have the motivation to put those last two photos right-side up, but I do have the motivation to look for quotes online about motivation.

Wow!  There are SO many motivational quotes on the internet that I don’t have the motivation to go through all of them. Here are four of them:

“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” — Confucius

“The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.”  —  Jordan Belfort

“The way to get started is to quit talking and to start doing.” — Walt Disney

“When someone tells me ‘no’ it doesn’t mean I can’t do it, it simply means I can’t do it with them.” — Karen E. Quinones Miller

I think that last quote, especially, is going to help me with my motivation today.

Here’s “That’s Motivation” from Julien Temple’s musical Absolute Beginners with David Bowie:

Absolute Beginners was one of the musicals I planned to include in my Masters thesis for Film Studies in the 1980’s, but I never got the motivation to finish it.

Do you have the motivation to comment about this post?

I always have the motivation to express my gratitude to YOU.

  1. I do have the motivation to comment on this blog post, and that is probably because I find your posts to be so awesome. I currently don’t have the motivation to blog. None of my posts “feel right” at the moment! I think I needed your second quote, actually – the one about “bulls**t stories”. Thank you!

  2. spend the the where your hearts tells you to spend it and then get to the rest in due time

  3. Sometimes procrastination is needed for us to end our thinking and before we are ready to act, Ann.
Lake looks like a nice dog.

  4. That Lake sure is a beautiful dog, Ann!
I have the motivation to tell you that with one Fringe now on your resume, your fear of failure should be greatly diminished regarding the application process for next year! And a country song would be great to bring back with you.

  5. I was motivated to exercise my neck in viewing the sideways on photos. I may have a lopsided view of life for the rest of the day!

  6. Just remember that you don’t HAVE to go back to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Ann. You could do something completely new. (Like the Vancouver Fringe šŸ˜Š)

Maybe you’re not feeling motivated because you’re concentrating on your wedding. . Or , Maybe it feels too overwhelming at this time. There\s something I would like to do as well, which should be pleasant, but i keep procrastinating it. I think it’s because I’m concentrating on solving certain issues, which probably have priority. But ever since I haven’t been doing this pleasant thing, I feel less relaxed.. Perhaps because if I do it , won’t be as nice as I would like for it to be, because I’m distracted with issues I\m trying to solve. So, I understand you, Ann

  8. Pets really can be great motivators. I’m sure Lake frequently motivates Deborah to get up and get moving. As for your own motivations, here’s something my grandfather gave me to help motivate me.

  9. Splendid light in those outdoor photos

  10. My motivation took a holiday and hasn’t returned>..

  11. Fear of failure is on me right now. I wake up with it and it hangs in there all day. Like a shadow. I am freelancing as a marketing person for the first time. Right now the fact that I have been paid is the biggest motivator. I’ve got lots of material to work with, I am a good writer and I love words and have gained followers on social media sites. I’m good, but…..what if I don’t do a satisfactory job? I’m probably writing this right now so that I can help myself to have confidence and maybe to help someone else know that others understand. Thanks for this post.

    • You ARE a good writer and your words always help me.

What if’s about the future can sap our confidence and motivation. What if we had faith in what we could do instead of fears about what we might not be able to do? Wouldn’t that be great?

All the best to you, Elva.

  12. I’m having the same trouble with motivation. Time of year perhaps?
