Day 1886: just relax

Today I’m giving a presentation about my therapy groups at a national group therapy conference.  Even though I’m telling myself to “just relax,”  I’m having a lot of trouble sleeping because of rotator cuff pain and pre-presentation jitters.

Also, I’ve decided to help my audience just relax today by starting out my presentation with the mindfulness exercise I always do when somebody is new to my groups.  I tell people to focus on their breath, breathing in something they think might be helpful (like gratitude) and breathing out something that is not serving them well (like anxiety or distraction). When I thought of starting my presentation that way, I just relaxed.

  1. I’m relaxing Ann, sitting here 9.30pm Thursday evening, playing my music, after coming home from the “Pub”, have been sent a glorious piece of music, sang by an Irish singer Kaz Hawkins, her voice blew me away.

    On different sides of the continent we are both awake — for different reasons. I too just posted my blog early — but rather than rotator cuff and pre-presentation jitters, it was about the wild things keeping me awake!

    I feel relaxed now after reading your words — I’m ready to go back to bed!

  4. I take nature photos. Soonmy heartbeat is in rhythm with the natural earth and I am relaxed. Good luck with yoyr presentstion!

  8. Sometimes I think, “Would it spoil some vast eternal plan if I were a wealthy man?” but that doesn’t help me relax. What does help me, if I’m going to speak to a group, is something Margaret Atwood said. She was very nervous before a reading and then realized that people were there because they liked her and wanted to hear what she had to say.
    Laughter can also help.

  9. Happy Purim, Ann! I love the water wall. It is very relaxing to see water falling artfully. Much more relaxing than to see it gushing out of the ceiling. Thanks for reminding me that the things that cause us stress can also bring us peace.
