I have the privilege, today, to present a definition of the word “privilege.”

noun
1. a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people.
“education is a right, not a privilege”
synonyms: advantage, benefit
I have the privilege and the right to make these two points:
- The example in that definition evokes my post from yesterday and
- Privilege” is the only word of all the many words whose definitions I’ve presented over the years in this blog that has had only ONE definition.
Is that an advantage or a benefit, having only one definition? Does that make things simpler and clearer? With all the discourse over “privilege,” I expected more definitions.

Maria Bamford has said her success is an example of what a person can achieve when they’re born sliding into home plate. It’s a funny line, especially from a a woman in a society where men have privileged status, not to mention a woman in a profession–standup comedy–that still heavily favors men.
It’s also an interesting perspective on privilege, and how, if she was born sliding into home plate some of us were born on home plate, and already several runs ahead.

As someone said to me today, many of us we are privileged to be living comfortable lives, not subjected to racist discrimination, or being persecuted or excluded for being Jewish as was common just decades ago. And yet it’s our privilege to live in these human lives, which Buddhism tells us we have earned. That all I got today!
