When the sounds of murderous gunfire ring out on American soil, I listen, again, to the sounds of Australian-born comedian Jim Jefferies and his monologue on gun control:
While the sounds of that comedy routine (recorded in my sound hometown of Boston and now sounding on Youtube here and here) include many obscenities, I passionately believe that the assaulting sound of gunfire is much more obscene than the sound reasoning I hear there.
Here are over seven minutes of important sounds about the 49 people killed in Orlando on Sunday.

That’s it. That is all it is. It was about a well regulated militia, not a few guys in a pickup truck, or a gun enthusiast with a penchant for assault weapons.

I am so deeply saddened, Ann.
Our small town, under 6000, has one of the best gay pride weekends there is. Although I am straight, I often join in the parade and will again this Saturday. I suspect there will be many somber moments in this year’s celebration.
I join with you, Emilie, in your deep sadness.
Yesterday I took a walk down Church Street here in Nashville, down to a couple of blocks where there are some gay nightclubs, an old bar called Blue Gene’s whose patrons are mostly gay but advertises being open to everyone (at least over 21), Out Central–an information center and meeting space for LGBT people where a friend of mine sometimes serves meals to homeless transgender youth, and the restaurant Suzy Wong’s House of Yum, run by former Top Chef contestant Arnold Myint. Suzy Wong is also Myint’s drag queen alter ego.
Other than a sign in one of the clubs I was surprised I didn’t see any expressions of grief or support. Maybe it’s too soon, I thought. Maybe people are expressing their grief in other ways.
Then I learned about a vigil held around the state capitol. State and government buildings were lit in rainbow colors. The mayor spoke to the community–the whole community.
June is Pride Month for LGBT people and their allies, so it was nice that in the wake of such horror I could feel pride in the city where I live.

I can understand it when two drug gangs start a war and kill each other and I can understand when someone on some wacky drug loses it and kills an innocent bystander. But I don’t understand why the huge divide between the liberal left and the radical right can unleash such carnage. And I still can’t see why it is has to be blamed on the whole of the world of Islam. And that’s not only an American thing – we have crazy Islamaphobes in Aust too. Just that most of ours don’t have Military assault rifles.
Well said! Guns cause these outrages. We’re not short of nutters over here either, but it doesn’t always end in a bloodbath. They need to change their constitution if necessary, to stop all these pointless deaths.
