Day 1259: What Moves Us

This weekend, I’ve been attending a 3-day group psychotherapy conference called  “What Moves Us: Tuning in to the Body, Our Groups, and Ourselves.

Yesterday morning, I was moved by a workshop presented by Bette Freedson, LICSWThe Healing Wisdom of the Mind, Body, and Soul: Intuition, Compassion, and Connection in a Group Setting.

What moved me, at that workshop?

  • Bette and I move with our therapy patients in very similar, moving ways.
  • During a guided meditation, I asked my very unusually moving and confused heart what it wanted, and my heart movingly told me it needs heart valve surgery (even though it’s very frightened).
  • During a moving meditation, I visualized a beautifully colored flag moving upwards in the wind, and I was moved to a sense of safety and peace of mind.
  • Bette Freedson was moved by that flag imagery of mine.
  • She told me that whenever I see a flag moving between now and my upcoming heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic, I would be moved to remember how movingly everybody else in the workshop was moved to wish me health and success with my operation in September.

Two hours later, I moved on to another moving conference activity —Music, Movement, and Moments of Meeting: A Group Experience, presented by the moving and wonderful Suzanne Cohen — in a huge ballroom at Simmons College in Boston. As I was moving freely and joyfully among 42 other dancing and moving group therapists, I moved my head up and saw a moving sight:

A world of flags, which moved me so.

What moves you? And which of these moving tunes would be the best theme song for this post?

I Like to Move It, Move it?

Something in the Way She Moves?

If you are moved to suggest another moving tune or anything else in a moving comment below, move it!

What is moving me, right now, is the realization that I’ll be participating today  in an all-day  demonstration group, SE-Informed Group Psychotherapy: Moving Beyond Trauma to Embodied Relationships.

So I’ve got to move it!

Moving thanks to all who helped me create this moving post and to you — of course! — for moving yourself here to read it, here and now.

  1. Reading what you moved you in this post moves me now.

  2. Your posts inspire my comments and this one a tad corny and definitely too long (but did I mention my birthday is on the Fourth, George M Cohan, too?
So Ann as I looked up at all those colorful flags, which needed a giant ceiling fan to make them flap and dance, a song from Elementary school jumped into my head…. “You’re a grand old flag,
    You’re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
    You’re the emblem of
    The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
    Ev’ry heart beats true
‘neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there’s never a boast or brag.
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag”

  3. wonderful movement of body, mind, and spirit

  4. Thinking of your upcoming surgery is very moving, dear Ann. And I am moved to add the Israeli flag -in thought -to the moving international collection and to send you a spirit of ever-moving energies from sunny Israel.

  5. I was moved by the flags. And “Something”, with a stage full of talent.☺ But that Madagascar clip…I want to put it on a loop. Smiling. 💛 💙 💜

  6. Your strength, courage, energy and obvious love of life always move me and brings a smile or a laugh to my lips 🙂

  7. thanx 4 sharing ~ (almost literally –> “moving” post)

  8. I am moved to wish you well with your surgery. I wish I could take your fear away Ann. Peace and love. ❤

  9. I’m moved to think of Freddy Mercury singing, “Any way the wind blows,” as well as Aesop’s fable of the oak and the reed. The oak is strong but resists the wind and is brought down. The reed moves with wind and water and survives the storm.
And a flag only shows its full colors when lifted by wind.
That’s a lot of thoughts but I was moved to share all of them.

  10. All my movement or in being moved I attribute to God most high. For in Him we live, move and have our being. Simply said: We are because He is.
    -Alan

  11. I love your “Move It” video and song. My grandbaby and I jiggy to it whenever we watch the movie. And as far as “moving” songs, nothing for me beats “It’s A Wonderful World” by Louie Armstrong. Makes me cry every time. Even danced to it at my son’s wedding.

  12. My body often complains when I move it creaks and groans and the pain oh the pain

  13. I really like your flag vision. There’s an old song called I’m a Movin’ On and I think you are. Here’s a link to a slow, bluesy version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TATJ_EEkK4

  14. I am moved by this post Ann … And I also got a chuckle from the Madagascar song!

  15. I had to get up and shake it! My husband had to come and see what i was up to.

I used dance among other arts with many populations when not retired and still counseling, also. It was very effective and healing–as arts can and usually are…:) I found it especially of good use with a Native American addictions treatment facility. You might have thought this would be easy for them with the culture of drumming/ chanting and singing/traditional dance. But it was not. It took time and trust (with one another as well as myself) for them to move beyond those parameters and finds multiple ways to express their grief and pain and joy. Very powerful experiences.

And best healing for your heart.( I was diagnosed with heart disease at 51.) Flags, may they fly!
