“Piece of Cake” is an idiom that means “easy.” I’ve never understood where that idiom comes from, since making a cake isn’t easy (although eating one is).

- I often think about what’s easy and what’s difficult for me and other people.
- In group and individual therapy, people talk about how changing old behaviors and patterns of thinking is NOT a piece of cake.
- I’ve changed my diet to drastically reduce all sweets, including pieces of cake.
- Including photos in my blog SHOULD be a piece of cake, but isn’t.

Roald Dahl’s first published story was called “Piece of Cake”. Becoming a writer for him was a piece of cake. He was asked to write down some notes about a mission he’d flown in the desert. He wrote a full account and it was published as he wrote it. There’s some controversy because he fudged some of the facts, but it was still a lucky break for him–and for fans of his work.
That reminds me of a mnemonic I learned many years ago–how to always spell “desert” and “dessert” correctly. “Dessert” has twice the sugar of a “desert”.

The one thing I’ve learned about eating cake is to never eat it alone. It’s sweeter when you share it, and that sweetness has only wonderful qualities! And… According to my eldest daughter — when you share it there are no calories! 🙂

A woman once asked me how I stay thin. As I shared with her about my food choices, which spanned salads & veggies to the occasional cake (and cheesecake!) she gave me quite a reaction. She stomped her foot, walked away, then shouted back “you don’t know how to diet!”
I have the thought that fake is good for me and I enjoy it thoroughly and with no sense of guilt. I do the same with chocolate, ice cream, as well as salads. I wonder if any extra calories are in the guilt?
I think your diet and your thoughts are all delicious. And guilt is definitely much worse for us than cake.

Referring to something as a “piece of cake” is often used to describe a situation that was easy, or required little effort. How did the term cake come to mean easy?
The idea of cake being “easy” originated in the 1870’s when cakes were given out as prizes for winning competitions. In particular, there was a tradition in the US slavery states where slaves would circle around a cake at a gathering. The most “graceful” pair would win the cake the in middle. From this the term “cake walk” and “piece of cake” came into being, both meaning that something was easy to accomplish.
The term was first used in print in 1936 by Ogden Nash who wrote, “Her picture’s in the papers now, and life’s a piece of cake.” Today the term is commonly used to describe tests at school, or friendly competitions.”

Writing a good blog post is not a piece of cake, and yet you did it! Fun post and quotes and photos. I could not imagine giving up cake. To me, cake can mean love – look at how we celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and weddings with – CAKE. So, saying, “it’s a piece of cake,’ means, something is as easy as love. (And we all know that love isn’t that easy, but it’s as necessary as… breathing.) 🙂

I like it when you go into idiomatic phrases. Apparently the phrase originated from American poet named Ogden Nash, who wrote Primrose Path in 1936. There’s a quote from it that reads:
“Her picture’s in the papers now, And life’s a piece of cake.”
I agree, say NO to sugar. Alzheimer’s disease has been proven to progress by refined sugar consumption.

I wish your photo sharing process was merely the icing on the cake, Ann. Dagnabbit! Try this on your phone: Settings, iCloud, photos. Turn off the sharing buttons and turn them back on. Sign off to iCloud and sign back on. Slide the buttons back on. This should reboot and clear the path for communicaitons. Do the same on your laptop if it doesn’t seem to work after a few hours. That’s how I got my iPhone and iPad talking to each other again for photos, under the advice of the Genius at the Apple store.
