Day 1012: Piece of Cake

“Piece of Cake” is an idiom that means “easy.”  I’ve never understood where that idiom comes from, since making a cake isn’t easy (although eating one is).

Want an explanation about the title of today’s post?  Piece of cake.

  1. I often think about what’s easy and what’s difficult for me and other people.
  2. In group and individual therapy, people talk about how changing old behaviors and patterns of thinking is NOT a piece of cake.
  3. I’ve changed my diet to drastically reduce all sweets, including pieces of cake.
  4. Including photos in my blog SHOULD be a piece of cake, but isn’t.

Taking photos like those is a piece of cake for me (although sharing them with you isn’t).

Hungry for some quotes about cake?  Piece of cake!

“Love is like a good cake; you never know when it’s coming, but you’d better eat it when it does!”
― C. JoyBell C.

.
“I suppose I wanted to have my cake and eat it.
But then again, what were you going to do with your cake if not eat it?
Frame it?
Use it as a sachet in your underwear drawer?”
― Marian Keyes, Watermelon

.

“SITTING TIGHT? Holing up? Waiting for answers?
Those are things I’m not good at.
Planning a massive attack against mechanical geeky-like things when i was already furious and itching to kill something?
Piece o’cake”
― James Patterson, Max

.

If you wait for a cake to be given to you so you will be happy- then you will be happy when someone gives you a cake. But if you buy a cake (or bake one) for yourself so you will be happy, you have found the way of happiness.”

― C. JoyBell C.

.

Mma Ramotswe sighed. ‘We are all tempted, Mma. We are all tempted when it comes to cake.’

That is true,’ said Mma Potokwane sadly. ‘There are many temptations in this life, but cake is probably one of the biggest of them.”
― Alexander McCall Smith, In the Company of Cheerful Ladies

.

“It baffles me that people think that obliterating the past will save them from its consequences, as if throwing away the empty cake plate would help you lose weight.”

― Timothy B. Tyson, Blood Done Sign My Name: A True Story

.

“Out of love I made you a cake. Also out of milk, eggs, flour, sugar, and vanilla.”
― Jarod Kintz, The Days of Yay are Here! Wake Me Up When They’re Over.

.

“You never know. Say the arena’s actually a giant cake-”

“Say we move on,” I broke in.

.

“I tried to explain as much as I could,”  Poppet says. “I think I made an analogy about cake.”

“Well, that must have worked,” Widget says. “Who doesn’t like a good cake analogy?”
― Erin Morgenstern, The Night Circus

Deciding what music to feature in today’s post?  Piece of Cake!

It’s a piece of cake to find Cake’s “Symphony in C” on YouTube.

What piece of cake do you like best in this post?

Piece-of-cake thanks to all the amazing cakes, people, and one cat contributing to the baking of today’s post and to you — of course! — for being the icing on the cake, today.

  1. “since making a cake isn’t easy (although eating one is)”

    Ha!

  2. Gotta love that African animal cake … too good to eat!!!
Thank you for a light and delicious piece of cake post this morning Ann!

  3. Roald Dahl’s first published story was called “Piece of Cake”. Becoming a writer for him was a piece of cake. He was asked to write down some notes about a mission he’d flown in the desert. He wrote a full account and it was published as he wrote it. There’s some controversy because he fudged some of the facts, but it was still a lucky break for him–and for fans of his work.
That reminds me of a mnemonic I learned many years ago–how to always spell “desert” and “dessert” correctly. “Dessert” has twice the sugar of a “desert”.

  4. NotAPunkRocker

I have yet to cut any cake that comes out looking magazine-perfect. So while it’s good and enjoyable, it isn’t perfect 😀

  5. I’ll take the whole cake now and two for the weekend.

  6. The one thing I’ve learned about eating cake is to never eat it alone. It’s sweeter when you share it, and that sweetness has only wonderful qualities! And… According to my eldest daughter — when you share it there are no calories! 🙂

  7. A woman once asked me how I stay thin. As I shared with her about my food choices, which spanned salads & veggies to the occasional cake (and cheesecake!) she gave me quite a reaction. She stomped her foot, walked away, then shouted back “you don’t know how to diet!”
I have the thought that fake is good for me and I enjoy it thoroughly and with no sense of guilt. I do the same with chocolate, ice cream, as well as salads. I wonder if any extra calories are in the guilt?

  8. what delicious and divine looking cakes! It was a piece of cake to google the origin of a piece of cake (not to be confused with Easy as Pie) “That was a “Piece of Cake”

Referring to something as a “piece of cake” is often used to describe a situation that was easy, or required little effort. How did the term cake come to mean easy?
The idea of cake being “easy” originated in the 1870’s when cakes were given out as prizes for winning competitions. In particular, there was a tradition in the US slavery states where slaves would circle around a cake at a gathering. The most “graceful” pair would win the cake the in middle. From this the term “cake walk” and “piece of cake” came into being, both meaning that something was easy to accomplish.
The term was first used in print in 1936 by Ogden Nash who wrote, “Her picture’s in the papers now, and life’s a piece of cake.” Today the term is commonly used to describe tests at school, or friendly competitions.”

  9. Writing a good blog post is not a piece of cake, and yet you did it! Fun post and quotes and photos. I could not imagine giving up cake. I don’t eat it a lot, but I love to bake a cake and I love how my family enjoys my specialty cakes (I think you’ll enjoy my blog post about the simplest hard cake in the world.’ http://roughwighting.net/2013/12/13/the-simplest-hardest-cake-in-the-world/. To me, cake can mean love – look at how we celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and weddings with – CAKE. So, saying, “it’s a piece of cake,’ means, something is as easy as love. (And we all know that love isn’t that easy, but it’s as necessary as… breathing.) 🙂

  10. yeoldefoole

I’m eating key lime pie as I read this…

  11. I like it when you go into idiomatic phrases. Apparently the phrase originated from American poet named Ogden Nash, who wrote Primrose Path in 1936. There’s a quote from it that reads:

“Her picture’s in the papers now, And life’s a piece of cake.”

I agree, say NO to sugar. Alzheimer’s disease has been proven to progress by refined sugar consumption.

  12. Love the quote by Marian Keyes!

  13. Sweet!

  14. Just read those cake quotes again because I’m awake at 4 am and reading cake quotes is something I can enjoy without waking the household. They are very tasty as a second helping, too. Thanks!

  15. I wish your photo sharing process was merely the icing on the cake, Ann. Dagnabbit! Try this on your phone: Settings, iCloud, photos. Turn off the sharing buttons and turn them back on. Sign off to iCloud and sign back on. Slide the buttons back on. This should reboot and clear the path for communicaitons. Do the same on your laptop if it doesn’t seem to work after a few hours. That’s how I got my iPhone and iPad talking to each other again for photos, under the advice of the Genius at the Apple store.

  16. Reading your blog is a piece of cake!!! I love cake, but I can’t eat cake, not anymore. Because of all the cake I have eaten I must now pay my penance in the gym – daily. AARGH!!!!!

    • I am sorry you have to pay penance, SD, but it’s a piece of cake for me to tell you how much I love your visits here!

  17. I quoted Ogden Nash, then read Maria’s post, rendering dreaming up a comment not really as easy as pie.

  19. Love the post, but I’ve always been more of a “pie” person, Ann. Sweet. 💕
