Day 642: You are not bad, girl (and boy)

I

you like these lyrics to Stevie Wonder‘s “You’ve Got it Bad Girl” (YouTube video found here), rewritten by me, on October 4, 2014.

When you believe your distortions,
And it’s holding you back from self-love,
Then you’ve got it bad, girl. You’ve got it bad, boy.

When you insist on excluding
All evidence that you’re worthwhile
Then you’ve got it bad, girl. You’ve got it bad, boy.

If you judge and disown an emotion,
And you shame, blame, and maim yourself
You will find your heart just sitting
Like a statue on a shelf, on a shelf, on a shelf.

Should you dismiss all your value,
And compliments that can be found,

Then you’ve got it bad, girl. You’ve got it bad, boy.

If you don’t see there’s a way out,
In loving yourself and RIGHT NOW,
Then you’ve got it bad, girl. You’ve got it bad, boy.

Do you know the posts I am writing,
Are intended to invite you
To practice new reactions,
To transform old things you do, old thoughts not true,
Hurting you, paining you.

You are not bad, girl. You are not bad, boy.

There’s no reward in detouring
My deep sincerity.
Especially since what you’re feeling,
Is perfectly clear to me. I can hear. I can see.

Before you discover the feeling,
And know that you don’t have to hide,
You’ve got it bad, girl. You’ve got it bad, boy.

But when you can find just a small space,
To let self love live in your mind,
Then you’ll have it good, girl. You’ll have it good, boy.

Thanks to Stevie Wonder and — of course! — to all the boys and girls reading this, today.

  1. “To practice new reactions,

From the little boy in me, I thank you! 🙂 Peace, luvz, and hugz! Uncle Tree

    • From the little girl and the adult in me, to the little and big Uncle Tree, Peace, Luvz, and Hugz right back at you!

  2. We often forget to feel compassionate about oneself (it completely does not mean selfish)..

  3. Such an uplifting post Ann. ❤ Nothing wrong with you my friend.

  4. This was such a great pep talk, Ann! I needed it today as I go ‘solo’ to a wedding of one my youngest daughter’s friends. I have lost touch since I have been single with the parents of her friend. I guess I needed this for the soccer moms’ group, especially that will be guests at this affair. You probably don’t need me to say this, but you are a fantastic writer and come up with outstanding subjects, Ann!

  5. You’ve got it rght girl, you’ve got the right girl, to write it right, girl.

    She’s Miss, ah, Know-It-All …

    Good way, Ann, good way.

  6. This reminds me of Audrey Hepburn in “Charade” who asks Cary Grant ‘you know what’s wrong with you?” When he asks what, she gives him a huge smile and says “Absolutely nothing.”

We do have to remember to be as kind to ourselves as we are (or should be) to others. Thanks for the uplifting words and Stevie Wonder’s song. I love his music.

    • Thank you for the uplifting, kind comment, Judy, and for evoking Audrey Hepburn’s beautiful smile. I love Stevie Wonder, his music, and your visits!

  7. Than you so much Ann for such a nice post 🙂 .

  11. Brilliant! Yes – totally spot on. My habit used to be What’s wrong with me? But now, when that voice starts, I flip it to What’s right with me? And I work to expand those things. Oh my goodness, it took along time to get there with the help of Claude Steiner’s wonderful, Scripts People Live. My battered old copy is practically dust after going back to it time and time again since the 70s. Excellent lyrics – excellent!
